More background

This week's progress shows a few more rows of hearts in place.  Silverfox has asked about the rows outside of the canvas area.  She asked if this is waste knots or part of the darning pattern.  What you are seeing is the beginning and ending pin stitches as well as my turning location.  I work the darning pattern across, go a few stitches beyond the row, come up in one row and go down next to it to turn the thread so it lays in channel in the direction I want to go.  Since darning is over and under, I want the thread to lay flat at the very edges as well.  These stitches outside the canvas design allow for my stitches across and back to lay flat.  I did a close up of the edges so you can also see the threads laying behind the canvas.  Hope this answers the question and if not, leave another comment and I will try and explain more.

By the way, check out Jane's blog....she is auditioning stitches for her background as well.  She has left her stitches in the side margins.  I pulled mine all out so you did not get to see them!  I only auditioned three stitches and two colors--using stash threads!

AWESOME explanation and thank you - that is what I thought it might be but was not sure how you accomplished it. thanks so very much! hearts are my signature (I sign every quilt and every NP canvas with a heart buried or obvious in it somewhere and this is one of my favorite background patterns (along with wine glasses!). I think this will make my edges lay much better and am excited to try this. thank you again!!
